Why Refinish Hardwood Floors?

Benefits of hardwood refinishing include:
Restores the natural beauty of your hardwood floors
Removes scratches, dents, and surface imperfections
Eliminates worn or faded finishes
Gives you the option to change stain colors
Extends the life of your existing flooring
Costs significantly less than replacing hardwood
Increases your home's value and curb appeal
Our Hardwood Refinishing Process

Detailed edge and corner sanding
Custom stain color selection
Premium water-based or oil-based protective finishes
Final inspection to ensure exceptional results
Our goal is to leave your floors looking as close to new as possible while preserving the character of the original hardwood.
Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Finishes
We offer both water-based and oil-based finishes to meet your needs.
Water-Based Finish
Dries faster
Low odor
Crystal-clear appearance
Excellent scratch resistance
Oil-Based Finish
Rich amber tone
Traditional hardwood appearance
Extremely durable
Longer curing time
We'll help you choose the finish that best fits your lifestyle, design preferences, and maintenance goals.
Is Your Hardwood Floor a Good Candidate for Refinishing?
Most solid hardwood floors can be refinished if they have enough remaining wear layer.
Common signs your floors are ready include:
Deep scratches
Dull finish
Water stains
Discoloration
Minor pet damage
Surface wear from years of foot traffic
If individual boards are damaged, we can often replace those boards before refinishing the entire floor for a seamless appearance.

I highly recommend 4th Generation Flooring for refinishing of wood floors! Addam and Josh maintained excellent communication throughout the project and did an amazing job at a very competitive price! Josh, who did the work on site, went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with his work. He even took time to go to the paint store to get the exact color match for baseboards that would work with the kitchen cabinets. I highly recommend 4th Generation Flooring if you are looking for someone to do an outstanding job refinishing your wood flooring!

Which Woods are the strongest and most durable?
Wood flooring is rated with a Janka score. This is a score based on how much pressure it takes to dent a wood. The higher the score the more pressure it takes to cause a dent. In Iowa most floors are Red Oak, which has a Janka rating of 1290 about the middle of the pack and most likely to be in your current home. These floors are Definitely worth saving and a refinish even with bigger dogs and younger kids in the house. Floors such as Pine, which has a Janka rating of 380 are soft and much more likely to get damaged. In a busy household with bigger dogs and younger kids the odds of damaging these floors is much much higher. If you have a low janka score and your floor is damaged it might be a better plan to buy a new prefinished hardwood of a stronger wood. click Below to go to Prefinished Hardwoods.
“I highly recommend Fourth Gen Flooring. I had both my 65 year-old wood floors refinished as well as carpet installed in a new bedroom. The wood floors went from being stained by animals from previous owners to a beautiful finish that they allowed me to choose and approve before they began the entire project. I had to postpone the carpet and pad installation due to personal reasons and Addam was very helpful and patient with the delayed timing. I plan on using Fourth Gen Flooring for all my flooring needs in the future as I trust them to do a wonderful job. Thank you!.”

What should I consider when selecting between hardwood and Vinyl flooring?
Choosing between hardwood flooring and laminate flooring depends on your budget, lifestyle, and long-term goals. Both are beautiful flooring options, but each offers unique advantages for different homes.
Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring is made from real wood and is known for its timeless beauty, durability, and ability to increase home value.
Pros:
Authentic natural wood appearance
Can be sanded and refinished multiple times
Lasts 50–100+ years with proper care
Adds resale value to your home
Available in many wood species, stains, and finishes
Best For:
Living rooms
Dining rooms
Bedrooms
Homes where long-term value is important
Vinyl Plank Flooring
Laminate flooring features a high-definition wood-look surface over a durable core, making it an affordable and durable alternative to hardwood.
Pros:
Lower cost than hardwood
Highly resistant to scratches and everyday wear
Easy to clean and maintain
Quick installation
Available in many realistic wood styles
Best For:
Busy households
Homes with children or pets
Rental properties
Budget-conscious remodeling projects
Key Factors to Consider
Budget
Vinyl flooring is generally more affordable, while hardwood is a long-term investment that can increase your home's value.
Durability
Hardwood can last for generations because it can be refinished. Vinyl is very resistant to scratches but cannot typically be refinished if damaged.
Moisture Resistance
Traditional hardwood is not ideal for areas with excessive moisture. For kitchens, bathrooms, or basements, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is often the better choice.
Maintenance
Both flooring types are easy to maintain with regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping using manufacturer-approved cleaners.
Appearance
If you want the warmth and character of genuine wood grain, hardwood is unmatched. Modern Vinyl flooring has become remarkably realistic and offers an excellent wood appearance at a lower price.
Which Flooring Is Right for You?
Choose hardwood flooring if you want:
A premium, natural wood floor
Long-lasting durability
Increased home value
The ability to refinish your floors
Choose Vinyl flooring if you want:
A budget-friendly option
Excellent scratch resistance
Low maintenance
A realistic wood appearance
